Raíz cuadrada
En el sistema de sastreado de Occidente, cifrado en cortes y curvas, predomina la silueta del cuerpo, antes que el textil y su historia.
Pero las prendas indígenas mexicanas se confeccionan con la unión de lienzos cuadrados y rectangulares. Es un origami textil único que usa esas dos figuras como base para dar origen a cualquier otra forma a partir únicamente de dobleces, pliegues y costuras.
Nos interesa este sistema de patronaje no sólo por su carga vernácula sino también por su calidad constructiva y arquitectónica.
La prenda geométrica que viste a la mujer indígena se lee como un libro abierto que cuenta la vida de la tejedora que la creó. Si se cortara una página y se dividiera con costuras, sería imposible leer la narración completa.
Nombramos a este sistema de confección “la raíz cuadrada” porque trabajamos con las raíces de México y con el sistema de patronaje cuadrado como herramientas de diseño.
