MANIFESTO OF FASHION AS RESISTANCE

Manifesto of Fashion as Resistance is a large-format book authored by Carla Fernández. At once an ideological manifesto and a celebratory document, the publication articulates her position on fashion, design, and garment production while marking two key milestones: 15 years of the Carla Fernández Fashion House and 30 years of collaborative creative and productive work with extraordinary Mexican artisans across 16 states of the Republic, encompassing more than 80 distinct craft techniques.

Conceived as an art book, the volume brings together more than 200 photographs that document these collaborations, the designer’s sources of inspiration, Mexico’s cultural roots, and the contemporary struggles of feminism. At the same time, it functions as a photographic essay tracing the evolution of Fernández as an artist—one who develops a distinct visual and conceptual language without seeking personal prominence.

The visual narrative of Manifesto of Fashion as Resistance is shaped by multiple photographic perspectives, including works by Graciela Iturbide, Maya Goded, Ricardo Ramos, Maruch Santíz, Ramiro Chaves, and Ana Hop, among others. The book also features texts by Julieta González, Florence Müller, Circe Henestrosa, and Cristina Rangel, who reflect on the work of the Carla Fernández Fashion House and its impact on the design scene in Mexico and internationally. These contributions situate the project within a broader cultural context, referencing its presence in major exhibitions and runways such as those at the Museo Jumex in Mexico City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, among many others.

Beyond its content, the physical book itself is conceived as a work of editorial art. It brings together Carla Fernández’s artistic vision with the editorial and design work of Maricris Herrera, resulting in an object that embodies the values and sensibilities the manifesto sets out to articulate.
