Amate paper dates back to pre-Hispanic times. It was used in the elaboration of codex papers, ceremonial costumbres, calendars and during offerings or ceremonies for the gods. It is still being used in Puebla’s high mountains, where they make use of natural resources to reflect their worldview.
During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to understand where and how the raw material is obtained to make the amate paper, so they can experience its elaboration and dyeing. They will also be able to learn about the use of "spirits", or "paper cutouts", that are used to express gratitude after a good harvest or during some relevant event according to the Otomí tradition.
Our products are made in creative and productive collaboration with Mexican artisans. Their elaboration involves manual processes that generate variations in colors and textures. It is important to note that the actual color of the garment may vary from the color shown on the screen.
