Design Miami
Each December Design Miami / awards the Design Visionary Award to a designer, sponsor, or activist who has contributed significantly to the field of design and influenced the world through continuous, tangible, and lasting impact.
The 2018 Design Visionary Award is given to Carla Fernández and Pedro Reyes, collaborators both in life and at work, Fernández and Reyes channel art, design, fashion and performance to reimagine the way people understand and participate in the world.
His work addresses the fundamental concerns of our time and opens dialogue between unlikely and sometimes unsuspected partners, facilitating intimate human exchanges that have become rare in this digital age.
Reyes and Fernández consider how objects, experiences and systems can create a sense of belonging, but also call people to action, bricklayers, doctors, welders, artisans, teachers and financiers who have participated in their participatory performance work . ranging from refinancing workshops and speed dating with religious leaders to confrontations with new shape geometries. They increase our awareness of what is happening around us and of our individual worth in the chain of history.
Design Miami / honors the commitment to action, and recognizes Pedro Reyes and Carla Fernández for their unwavering efforts to create change through their engaging practices. The graphic identity of the 2018 fair is created by Carla and Pedro for Design Miami / and inspired by posters protesting the Parisian uprising of May 1968, a revolution that marked a social and cultural turning point and inspired an artistic movement.
